In addition to those professional responsibilities which are required of all classroom teachers; as outlined in the School Teacher’s Pay and Conditions Document, the post holder’s key responsibility will be to focus on maintaining and improving the standards of teaching, learning, achievement and attainment for pupils in Years 3 and 4, and to contribute to strategic planning as part of the Senior Leadership Team.
The post holder will be accountable to the Head Teacher.
Middle Phase Leader (Years 3 & 4) – Professional Responsibilities
In addition to the responsibilities of a class teacher
As Middle Phase Leader, you will have a key leadership role in ensuring high-quality education and pastoral care for pupils in Years 3 and 4. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, you will drive standards, support colleagues, and ensure a smooth transition from Key Stage 1 and into upper Key Stage 2.
Leadership and Management
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for Years 3 and 4, setting high expectations and supporting the school’s vision and values.
- Act as a role model for excellent classroom practice and professionalism.
- Monitor and evaluate teaching, learning, and pupil outcomes across the phase, identifying areas for development and driving improvement.
- Lead phase meetings, ensuring a clear focus on teaching and learning, pupil progress, and curriculum delivery.
- Line manage and support teachers and teaching assistants in the phase, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback as appropriate.
- Undertake any other duties deemed appropriate by the Headteacher to support the school’s aims and objectives.
Curriculum and Standards
- Lead the development and delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum across Years 3 and 4, ensuring continuity, progression, and high-quality learning experiences.
- Promote the use of adaptive teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners, including those with SEND, EAL, and those who are more able, ensuring every child can access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
- Monitor assessment data to track pupil progress and ensure targeted interventions are in place to support all learners.
- Work collaboratively with subject leaders to ensure curriculum consistency and coverage across the school.
Teaching and Learning
- Promote and share effective teaching strategies across the phase to raise standards and support pupil engagement, with a particular focus on adaptive teaching to ensure that all children, regardless of ability, are appropriately challenged and supported.
- Regularly carry out learning walks, book scrutinies, and pupil voice activities to monitor standards and inform development planning.
- Support colleagues with behaviour management and differentiation to ensure all children make good or better progress.
Pastoral and Behaviour
- Foster a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports the personal development and wellbeing of all pupils.
- Support teachers in managing behaviour positively and consistently in line with school policy.
- Communicate effectively with parents/carers, supporting strong home-school relationships.
Communication and Collaboration
- Act as the key link between the SLT and the Middle Phase team, ensuring effective two-way communication.
- Collaborate with other phase leaders to ensure a coherent and unified approach to school improvement.
- Contribute to whole-school events, planning, and initiatives, representing the Middle Phase perspective.
Professional Development
- Identify professional development needs within the phase and support staff training and growth, especially in the area of adaptive teaching and differentiated instruction.
- Keep up to date with developments in curriculum, pedagogy, and educational policy relevant to Years 3 and 4.
- Contribute to whole-school CPD where appropriate.
