Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES), the largest local authority adult education provider in England, is seeking inspiring and flexible sessional tutors to help deliver a ground-breaking £1 million Community Learning Growth Programme. This initiative is dedicated to supporting economically inactive adults across Birmingham into employment, further learning, volunteering, and civic participation—through hyper-local, high-impact learning experiences.
This is your opportunity to be part of an exciting new chapter in adult and community education, as we expand our curriculum to reach learners where they are, embed soft skills, and drive genuine social and economic change.
About the role:
Sessional Tutors will be central to the delivery of six bold intervention strands that tackle systemic barriers to learning and employment through creative and community-rooted learning models. You will work under the direction of Programme Managers and contribute to one or more of the following strands:

You will:
Plan and deliver high-quality, learner-centred teaching and assessment in your subject area.
Integrate core Essential Skills (the 7 Cs: communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, community awareness, computer literacy, and self-management).
Contribute to inclusive learning environments that prioritise confidence, wellbeing, and progression.
Collaborate with community navigators, peer mentors, and grassroots organisations to boost learner engagement.
Adapt delivery to meet the diverse needs of under-served, economically inactive learners.
We are particularly interested in tutors with experience in:
- Community-based teaching and outreach, especially in partnership with grassroots organisations, community centres, or faith-based venues
- Literacy and numeracy for adult learners, particularly in working-class communities
- ESOL for employment, including workplace English, CV building, and interview preparation
- Childcare training, including Ofsted-recognised qualifications and early years development
- Volunteering, personal development, and leadership coaching, including peer mentoring and confidence-building
- Creative arts and wellbeing, including arts & crafts, cooking and food safety, woodwork, horticulture, sewing/textiles, and health & beauty
- Digital and media skills, such as photography, podcasting, community journalism, and radio broadcasting
- Civic and political education, including public speaking, grassroots campaigning, and community organising
- Enterprise and self-employment, including business planning, budgeting, and supporting learners to develop micro-enterprises
What you will need:
- Recognised teaching qualification at minimum Level 3 (or willingness to work towards one)
- Strong subject knowledge and experience of delivering inclusive adult learning
- A passion for community empowerment and a learner-first approach
- Experience working with hard-to-reach or economically inactive learners is desirable
