About the Company

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is an independent body under the Ministry of Justice. It investigates complaints and deaths in custody across prisons, probation, and immigration detention services. The PPO’s Research, Data and Analysis Team identifies trends and insights from thousands of annual investigations to inform better practice across the justice system.

About the Opportunity

This is a permanent, entry-level research position ideal for early-career candidates looking to develop practical skills in survey research, data analysis, and reporting. As a Research Assistant, you’ll support key outputs including performance reports, stakeholder feedback analysis, and thematic studies that shape national policy and service improvements. You'll work closely with experienced social researchers and gain hands-on experience with real case data across a diverse and fast-paced portfolio.

Salary: £32,416 – £34,361

Pension: Civil Service pension (28.97% employer contribution)

Format: Hybrid working (minimum three office days per week)

What We're Looking For

A 2:1 or above in a relevant social science (e.g. Criminology, Psychology, Sociology) with research methods training
Ability to methodically analyse quantitative and qualitative data
Experience or knowledge of survey research
High attention to detail and time management
Strong teamwork skills and resilience
Interest in the UK criminal justice system

Desirable: Experience with SPSS or R, and Microsoft Office tools
