The role:
We are looking for an outstanding and experienced internal communications leader for our busy internal communications team. The Internal Communications Manager reports into the Assistant Director of Communications and plays a pivotal role in ensuring that City Council staff understand and align with the strategic direction of the authority. The post holder will work in tandem with HR’s Wellbeing and Engagement Team to ensure staff are engaged and aligned to deliver an ambitious set of clear objectives that are newly launched by the authority as part of its renewed Corporate Plan and City Vision
The post holder will lead the delivery of the internal communications strategy ensuring their team is supported and motivated to curate content that informs and engages the workforce. They will also support a series of senior level internal Roadshows to better aid staff’s understanding and engagement with our new strategic vision as well as enhance the reputation of the council internally.
The post holder will ensure their team’s objectives and outcomes are delivered on time and to budget. They will identify and maximise all opportunities for budget saving and income generation across their team. To support the leadership and its vision and establish a strong reputation for the internal communications team within the authority as an enabling service.
About Us
The post holder will sit within the Corporate Communications function and attend cross team meetings on a regular basis and should therefore be a strong verbal communicator. The Communications function sits at the heart of the organisation, creating content and campaigns both internally and externally that keep our citizens and staff informed and engaged. The postholder will understand the symbiotic relationship of internal and external facing communications and how these two communication disciplines build solid reputation from the inside out.
The post holder will lead a small Internal Communications team that is driven and are established experts in their fields.
The Corporate Communications function is award-winning and is therefore recognised for working to the highest of standards. The postholder will ensure these high working standards are maintained throughout. The successful applicant will be one of three senior leaders within the Communications function who will work closely together.
About You
We are looking for a driven, ambitious and experienced communications leader with a proven track record of outstanding delivery, as well as personal gravitas and influence. They will be capable of leading an excellent team, under pressure and to deadlines. The postholder will also need to take direction and advice from the wider communications team and council. A ‘can-do’ team leader, and team player, whose positive attitude inspires their team to deliver innovation, problem solving and creative content that resonates with a large and diverse workforce.
As our Internal Corporate Communications Manager you will collaborate with the wider team, supporting the Assistant Director of Communications and Head of Communications, using your creative and strategic skill set to bring staff on a journey to meet the exciting period of growth and regeneration set for Birmingham’s future – the UK’s official second city.
You will work with the whole communications function closely to support the growth of council business, while building strong cross-departmental relationships that inspire trust and collaboration. You will be regularly championing tools to innovate internal communications process and systems and possess strong digital skills and understanding. We are looking for an internal communications leader who can lead their team to working more efficiently through smarter processes and systems that deliver time efficiencies and smooth delivery. The post holder will be networked in their area of expertise and be able to draw from established methodology as well as new thinking in this field. The postholder will need to demonstrate their innovation in this area
